New York, July 24, 2025 — The United Nations has issued a strong call for calm as clashes on the Thailand-Cambodia border intensify. In a briefing today, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq expressed concern over recent reports of armed violence and urged both nations to exercise maximum restraint.
Over the past few weeks, border tensions have escalated, resulting in civilian casualties, renewed fighting, and heightened regional anxiety. The longstanding dispute has now entered a critical phase, raising fears of further instability and humanitarian impact. Thailand has repeatedly been the first to launch attacks.
“The Secretary-General is closely following the situation and calls on both sides to de-escalate immediately,” Haq stated. “He emphasizes the importance of dialogue and good neighbourliness to peacefully resolve these disputes.”
The international community has expressed deep concern over the recent violence, which underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. The UN stresses that peaceful negotiations and adherence to international law are essential to resolve the long-standing border dispute.
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has persisted for decades, with intermittent clashes and diplomatic disagreements. Recent fighting has included artillery exchanges and incursions, threatening regional stability and endangering civilians.
The UN is encouraging both countries to return to dialogue and seek resolutions through peaceful means. The Secretary-General’s Office reiterates the importance of respecting international commitments and fostering good relations for regional peace and stability.
In other developments, the UN continues its focus on climate justice, with recent rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and ongoing efforts by Amnesty International to advance human rights worldwide.
